Cannon Air Force Base will open its gates to the public on June 6, 2026, for a commemorative air show themed “Normandy to Now.” This event honors the legacy of the D-Day landings while showcasing the evolution of American’s unconventional airpower from WWII to today. General admission to the event is free and open to the public.
As part of the air show, the base plans to host fly-in as well as a car show. Attendees will experience a full lineup of aerial demonstrations, including performances by modern Department of War aircraft, WWII-era warbirds, and aerial performances from civilian pilots as well as Cannon’s own Air Commandos. Historic displays, hands-on activities, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics exhibits will also be included in the day’s events.
Additional information on where to get your ticket and how to register for fly-in and the car show will be coming soon. Stay tuned to our official Cannon Air Force Base Face Book page as well as our cannon.af.mil website for updates!

Our second year doing this event!!
We’re thrilled to return for our second year participating in the Big Bang event. More details will follow, but mark your calendars now, this one is always a highlight.
If you know a potential guest speaker: aviation, aerospace, STEM, leadership, or anything inspiring, please send their name our way. We’d love to incorporate more voices into our events this year.
We’d also love your help shaping these events. If you have ideas, suggestions, or know of other community activities where you think WAI‑LOE should have a presence, please share them with us, member input is what keeps our outreach strong and meaningful. We’re also looking for volunteers to help staff our booths throughout the year, and even a small amount of your time has a big impact. We’re looking forward to seeing many of you throughout the year and building an outreach program that truly reflects the strength and diversity of our membership. Thank you for being part of the Land of Enchantment chapter and for everything you do to support women in aviation across New Mexico.
The field of the National Championship Air Races is made up of seven thrilling airplane classes. Six of the classes race on a somewhat circular pylon course. “Each heat consists of up to eight planes in competition, flying between 50 and 250 feet in the air, with aircraft reaching speeds up to 500+ mph in flight. The seventh class – STOL Drag – competes in two-plane drag races up and down the ramp.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the world’s largest hot air balloon festival, held each October in Albuquerque. For nine days, hundreds of balloons launch in coordinated “mass ascensions” at sunrise, filling the sky with color. Pilots from around the globe participate, including competition events and special shape rodeos featuring creatively designed balloons. Evening “Balloon Glows” light up the field as inflated balloons illuminate against the night sky. Thanks to Albuquerque’s unique weather pattern known as the “Box,” pilots can navigate predictable wind currents, making the event especially spectacular and safe.
We’re partnering with the New Mexico Museum of Space History to celebrate Women’s History Month! There will be booths, activities, food trucks, and more. Our chapter will be there to support the event and inspire future aviation and aerospace professionals. We’d love for members to join us and help represent our chapter.
Come enjoy a relaxed evening with us to catch up, share ideas for future events, and spend time together. Feel free to bring family and friends. Please RSVP by replying to this email so we can let Tumbleweed know how many to expect.
Our first meeting of the year will be virtual on Google Meet, the meeting link is below. Please tune in to meet other members, hear about our exciting plans for 2026, and learn more about your new board. BONUS: we have an awesome guest speaker, Cindy Strong. See her bio below.

Holloman Air Force Base will host the Legacy of Liberty Air Show Sunday, June 2, 2024.
"The Thunderbirds thrilled a crowd of 28,000 during our air show in 2022," said U.S. Air Force Col. Justin Spears, 49th Wing commander in a news release.

The one-day event is free to the public and features aerial performances, food, music, a kid zone, "a variety of aircraft on static display," and a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) center.
The list of performers and vendors has not been released as officials said it is still being finalized.
"We are so excited to open our gates to the community again and put on a really great event that everyone will enjoy," said Spears.

From your President, Jacquelyne Nichols…
The WAI Conference is the best event of the year. The positive energy radiates from the building. In a male dominated industry, it’s easy to feel overlooked and overwhelmed as women. This conference will fill your head with knowledge, fill your phone with contacts, and fill your heart with joy and inspiration from all of the incredible women you will meet and network with. It’s hard to put into words how incredible this conference is…so you’ll just have to go and experience it for yourself.
In 2022, not only did I meet many of my real life hero’s either casually walking the halls or at the celebration events, but I also interviewed for and got hired by American Airlines. It is a wonderful opportunity to job search or to find out what jobs exist in the aviation industry that might be right for you.
In 2023 and again this year I will be a presenter and give back to this amazing community that has given me so much. For my graduate degree capstone project, I focused on the policy changes that need to occur surrounding family planning in the military, specifically as it pertains to the high rates of infertility experienced by servicemembers, and especially those who work in the medical and aviation fields. I will also address the lack of assisted reproductive technology options and offer suggestions for the way forward. To learn more about my presentation, click here.
Whether you are military or civilian, this brief will have some useful information for you or for you to pass on to others. I would love to see some of your faces in the audience as I give this presentation.

What does Tower do?
Air Traffic Control Towers (ATCT) have windows! ATCTs monitor aircraft that are on the ground or airborne within 5 miles of the airport. Due to the close proximity and range of service, these controllers use line of sight to help aid in the safe flow of traffic.
What is TRACON?
TRACON or Terminal Radar Approach Control Facilities are U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facilities that house air traffic controllers who guide aircraft approaching and departing airports. TRACON controllers generally handle within a 30- to 50-mile radius of an airport and up to 10,000 feet, as well as aircraft flying over that airspace.
